The Hidden Medium

A grammar of cultural ecology

Every practice has a visible form and a hidden medium. The visible form is what we make. The hidden medium is what makes us.

A shared drawing is a practice of trust. Recordings carry the voice beyond its moment of speech. Caring for a place changes the person tending it.

Alongside what we make, we each develop ways of listening, deciding, remembering, and belonging. Those ways of working influence what becomes possible next.

The hidden medium names these relationships and processes. They can be difficult to see in the finished work, yet they shape both its making and the people involved.

Recognizing these processes changes how we work. We can attend more deliberately to how trust develops, how decisions are shared, and how stories are carried forward.

The observations gathered here come from years of making work in public. They offer ways to look more closely at what happens through creative practice and what continues afterward.

What carries forward

These processes meet within the work.

Listening can open an encounter. Relationships develop through what people do together. What they remember, preserve, and pass on influences how others will listen and act.

Culture is renewed through those choices. Each generation receives something, changes it through use and care, and leaves conditions that others will inherit.
